ANSI IKECA Standards

ANSI/IKECA Standards

IKECA develops voluntary consensus standards for the cleaning, inspection, and user maintenance of commercial cooking operations for the purpose of protecting life and property from fire. IKECA became an American National Standards Institute accredited standards developer in 2009.

IKECA has been recognized as a standards writing organization by the U.S. Department of Justice.

IKECA standards are voluntary and consensus standards; IKECA will make no effort to enforce compliance with any of its standards, nor will it attempt to influence any governmental agency to adopt its standards as mandatory, although it will certainly cooperate with any governmental agencies seeking its assistance.

For many years, the commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning industry has relied on NFPA 96®, Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations, which is developed and maintained by the Technical Committee on Venting Systems for Cooking Appliances of the National Fire Protection Association. IKECA has long been and is represented on this committee. IKECA/ANSI standards will work in concert with NFPA 96.

ANSI IKECA C10-2021 Standard for the Methodology for Cleaning Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, 2nd Edition

This standard is intended to determine the methodology for frequency and necessity for commercial kitchen exhaust system cleaning through inspection procedures, to define acceptable methods for cleaning exhaust systems and components, and to set standards for acceptable post- cleaning cleanliness. The purpose of this standard shall be to enhance public safety by reducing the potential fire safety hazards associated with commercial kitchen exhaust systems, irrespective of the type of cooking equipment used and whether used in public or private facilities.

This first edition of IKECA C10-2011, Standard for Cleaning of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, was developed by the IKECA Standards Development Committee Consensus Body. It approved the standard on September 1, 2011. It was approved as an American National Standard on December 9, 2011. This is the second edition of the ANSI/IKECA C10 Standard titled ANSI/IKECA C10-2021. It was approved as a revised American National Standard on November 12, 2020.

ANSI/IKECA I10-2020 Standard for the Methodology for Inspection of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, 2020 Edition

This standard shall provide minimum requirements for inspecting commercial kitchen exhaust systems and system components for mechanical conditions, structural integrity, fire safety, and cleanliness levels. The purpose of this standard shall be to reduce the potential fire safety hazards associated with commercial kitchen exhaust systems through inspection services.

The ANSI/IKECA Standard I10-2nd Edition was developed through a consensus standards development process approved by the American National Standards Institute. This process brings together volunteers representing varied viewpoints and interests to achieve consensus on the Standard. Volunteers from IKECA administer the process and established rules to promote fairness in the development of consensus. ANSI/IKECA Standard I10-2nd Edition is targeted toward owners and managers of facilities, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), insurance loss control specialists, and those interested in industry-accepted processes procedures for the cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of commercial kitchen exhaust systems.

ANSI/IKECA M10-2023 Standard for the Methodology for Maintenance of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, 2023 Edition

This standard shall define acceptable methods to operate and maintain commercial kitchen exhaust systems by end users in the interim between professional system cleaning services. The purpose of this standard shall be to enhance public safety by reducing the potential fire safety hazards associated with commercial kitchen exhaust systems, irrespective of the type of cooking equipment used and whether used in public or private facilities.

The ANSI/IKECA Standard M10 was developed through a consensus standards development process approved by the American National Standards Institute. This process brings together volunteers representing varied viewpoints and interests to achieve consensus on the Standard. Volunteers from IKECA administer the process and established rules to promote fairness in the development of consensus. ANSI/IKECA Standard M10-2nd Edition is targeted toward owners and managers of facilities, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), insurance loss control specialists, and those interested in industry-accepted processes procedures for the cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of commercial kitchen exhaust systems.

“The IKECA / ANSI Trio of National Standards represent an industry-leading first. These standards are adopted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction, Insurance Underwriters, and National Code bodies as reference standards within the codes. Designed to begin where the Fire Codes have left off, they are established to provide minimum safety guidelines to service providers, inspectors, and owner/operators after the initial installation and for the life cycle of the ventilation system. They are developed and maintained by a consensus body of industry leading experts in their fields which represent a cross functional group of stakeholders. There is an opportunity during the standards cycle for your involvement through submittals of public comments to strengthen these standards. We encourage all to participate through your inputs, volunteerism, education to the public, and local adoption of these standards providing an enhanced life-safety benefit to industry. Please GET INVOLVED!”
